The Frisco Community Newsletter - Established in 2001 - Your Key to Community

Established 2001 * Your Key To Community * Now with 41,000 Readers!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to another exciting, informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 9th year with 41,000 weekly readers. I started the newsletter when I was a member of the Frisco City Council as a comprehensive grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various issues. After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I decided to continue the weekly newsletter. We invite you to visit our website to find out how to submit your FREE community listing. Our readers are the key to The Frisco Community Newsletter and couldn’t happen without your eyes and ears letting us know what’s going on with your respective schools and organizations in our city.

We also want to make sure that we connect with you on as many levels as possible to keep you informed of what’s going on in Frisco. We have LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as blogs. You can find us in the sidebar of this newsletter.

If you want the latest about happenings in and around Frisco, be sure to follow @FriscoCommunity on Twitter.

We hope you are enjoying your summer so far! We’re currently in Matt’s hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts (northeast of Boston) visiting family. We’re also here in time for an annual event, St. Peter’s Fiesta. If you happen to visit the Boston area the last weekend of June, make sure you put this fun-filled event on your “to–do” list. The legendary greasy pole contest is something like you’ve never seen! It takes place 200 feet off Pavilion Beach. A forty-five foot telephone pole is attached to a platform and extends out over the water. A red flag is nailed to a stick at the end of the pole which is then heavily greased. Then, one by one, contestants take their turn trying to tear off the makeshift flag pole before slipping and falling into the water. It’s definitely an entertaining sight to behold! Be sure to subscribe to Joey Ciaramitaro's Good Morning Gloucester daily blog before you visit to make sure you are “in the know” with what’s going when you'll be in town!

Please make sure you check out our Spotlight Interview with Lisa Giess, owner of A New Dawn Boutique in downtown Frisco, named in loving memory of her sister Dawne who she lost in a tragic accident 3 years ago. A New Dawn Boutique is a 3000 square foot home decor consignment and specialty gift shop and when you read our interview with her, you’ll find a compelling offer you can take advantage of!

Please also be sure to check out our Newsletter Sponsor MedVentures 2010 Conference at the Embassy Suites Frisco Conference Center.  MedVentures 2010 is an annual, regional, early stage investment conference and company showcase focused on the medical technology sector.  The program includes an angel investor panel discussion, venture capital panel discussion and a showcase of 20 emerging medical technology companies. The purpose of the conference is to connect quality emerging medtech companies seeking capital with investors that focus on their industry sector. We are proud to be a sponsor of this innovative conference which you can find out how to register below.

Last  week, Erika and I had a chance to meet and interview Bernard Nussbaumer, the proprietor of Global Peace Factory, a gourmet coffee house that opened up earlier this year at Stonebriar Commons. We were so impressed not only with the physical layout of the coffee shop but his sense of responsibility to our community and our world. Plus, he’s just a genuinely nice person! If your group needs a place to meet, they have an upstairs loft perfect for 15-20 people - they can also serve lunch. Make sure you read to the end because Bernard has a VERY compelling offer!

You may have heard that Oprah Winfrey is looking for new shows to add to her O! network, and there are at least vying for her own show tied to our Frisco area – Suzy Borg, The Recycle Goddess, and Megan Zucaro, who won the Mrs. Texas United States 2007 title right here and Frisco and whose husband Zeke Zucaro is a regular contributor to this newsletter with The Real Estate Investment Tip of the Week. Thankfully, you won’t have to choose who to vote for because they are submitted in different categories, so you can vote for both! Be sure to read about their TV show ideas below, view their submission video and vote for both!

We are also looking to add a few people to The Frisco Community Newsletter sales staff. Please  for more information. Additionally, the company I work for, HRchitect, is hiring for a Sales Position. A detailed description of that position can be found below.

Also, because we love to share cool finds with you (especially when it comes to saving you money) we discovered a great place online with significant discounts to places in and around Frisco and wanted to share it with you. It’s called Groupon and recently, we saw big discounts on certificates to Kenny’s Burger Joint and Kids-N-Art in Frisco. It’s free to sign up.

Finally, we encourage you to visit our website to submit your FREE community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out the archives, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.

Have a blessed weekend!

NEWSLETTER SPOTLIGHT: Lisa Giess, A New Dawn Boutique

THE FRISCO COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER: Lisa, tell us a little about why you chose to open A New Dawn Boutique in historic downtown Frisco.

LISA GEISS: Our store opened about 7 months ago in loving memory of my sister Dawne (hence our store name  - A New Dawn Boutique). We lost Dawne in a fatal accident about 3 years ago..... she always dreamed of owning a boutique where she could bring great valued, one of a kind merchandise to her local community.  Unfortunately, she was unable to fulfill her dream.  This has been a wonderful opportunity to allow her dream to live on.

A New Dawn Boutique is a home decor consignment and specialty gift shop. Our store offers 3000 sq ft of great deals for our customers and the charm of the boutique aligns perfectly with historic downtown Frisco.  We chose downtown Frisco because of the setting of historic homes which have been converted to retail space.  The residential-feel works perfectly for our store allowing our merchandise to be displayed in a "home-like" setting rather than a commercial feeling.

TFCN: What is it that you do better than your competition?

LG: Amazing value, top quality products and GREAT customer service! Our mission is to offer exceptional value to our customers allowing them to improve the comfort of their home.  When people are moving, redecorating, or downsizing, they have furniture and accessories that are still "like new" but just don't fit into their new décor or lifestyle.   A New Dawn Boutique combines consignment furnishings with wonderful antiques, and one-of-a-kind items that are not available just anywhere and all at GREAT prices.

In addition to home decor consignment. we are proud to support local artists and independent business owners by selling their NEW products to increase their personal income.  Our vendor base has grown quickly and we offer great one of a kind items making this a great place to find gifts.  Natural Stone Jewelry by Jacque by Design, Stone Art by VSG Design, Spices by Good Spice, Terry's Barbeque Sauce, Jellies by Kaps, Salsas and Jams by Grilled Sergeant Gourmet, Decorative Coasters, Decorative Candles, Cross Necklaces, Custom Journals are just a few of the locally made items we offer in our store. If we don't have what you are looking for, be sure inquire about our "Wish List".  Since we receive merchandise daily, we will notify our customers when items on the "wish list" match their requests.

TFCN:  What types of items are you looking for right now for the store?

LG: We accept consignment daily so our merchandise changes constantly.   Artists interested in applying to participate in our vendor program can view our vendor agreement contract on our website.  Vendor and Consignor contracts can be printed on our website @  http://www.anewdawnonline.com.

TFCN:   What do you love best about Frisco?

LG: The people.  We have made so many friends in the short time we've been open....new friendly faces and our regulars who come in weekly to see what's changed are the backbone of our success.  We are a family owned business.....getting to know our customers is our specialty.

One of our great customers, Karen, recently wrote this review:

“Nothing but good things to say about this place! I'm honored to be the 1st person to review this wonderful shop. They've been open since Nov. 09' & opened the boutique in memory of their sister, Dawne, who they lost in an accident. It had always been Dawne's dream to have a place like this. Just knowing that is reason enough to stop by. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by great people. I met 2 people on 2 separate occasions- Kim, and the owner, Lisa. Then you discover the good bargains! I know I've spent twice as much for 1/2 the product at other consignment stores. When I departed, I had purchased 20 items, including an end table and my best find, an immaculate 8 serving set of Fitz & Floyd dinnerware (for only $36.66!) and I spent a grand total of $167. Most of the items I purchased were home decor items, which were purchased at under $5. I highly recommend that you check this place out! You won't be sorry!‎”

TFCN: What are some of your favorite places to eat in Frisco?

LG: We love 5th Street Patio Cafe, Randy's Steakhouse, and Manny's.   (Keeping business local is very important to Frisco thriving.)

TFCN: Anything people would be surprised to know about you?

LG: I've been involved in retail for more than 20 years but this is the most rewarding and fun I've ever had.  I love getting to know people and the gratification of knowing we are helping others.

TFCN:  Do you have a compelling offer for our newsletter readers?

LG: Mention you saw us in The Frisco Community Newsletter and receive an additional 15% off entire consignment purchase now through July 31st.

TFCN: Please tell our readers how they can find you.

LG: A New Dawn Boutique is located at 7850 Main Street in Downtown Frisco. Our phone is 214-407-7056, , and here’s our website. You can also follow us on Twitter or Facebook.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. We are beginning to plan for our 2010 NNO. I saw that Frisco will be doing theirs on August 3. I see on the NNO page, Texas has the option to have theirs on Oct 5. I know it is much cooler in October and we had a record turnout last year in our neighborhood (I know our delay due to weather also contributed to the later date). I was just curious as to why Frisco is opting to have it in August rather than October.

A. Frisco's date for National Night Out this year is Tuesday, August 3rd. For the past two years we have used the alternate Texas date in October, but have had lower turnouts and numerous requests to return to August. After this past year's festivities, we put it up for a public vote and received an outpouring of support for a return to August.

Though the weather may be warmer, many people like the August date since kids are out of school still and able to stay out longer, there's more daylight, and the weather is more predictible (no rain like the past two years in October).

Last week, Erika and I (Matt) had a chance to meet and interview Bernard Nussbaumer, the proprietor of Global Peace Factory, a gourmet coffee house that opened up earlier this year at Stonebriar Commons. NEW - Emler Swim School's Frisco Location

Children cannot learn if they are not happy – so Emler Swim School is all about students having a great time while become skilled at swimming!

Emler provides a non-threatening and nurturing environment, full of creative teaching methods to ensure that every student is comfortable and confident in the water.

There are few age barriers in the lifesaving sport of swimming. Emler students range from 6 months to 100 years old.

Because effective learning and safety requires ongoing reinforcement and repetition, we encourage once weekly swim lessons year round. Educators have proven that this intermittent schedule of learning causes permanent retention of skills.

Seventeen levels of instruction are found in our award-winning curriculum, SwimScript ©. We constantly update our curriculum with new techniques and safety skills, keeping Emler on the cutting edge of aquatic education for all swimmers.

Our use of M&M’s

Emler has been using M&M candies as positive reinforcement in swim lessons since the school opened in 1975.

While beginning students only consume about seven pieces of candy per lesson, the positive reinforcement of M&M’s quickly rewards our students for doing a skill correctly, thereby increasing the possibility that they will repeat that correct skill again.

Emler believes in positive reinforcement, and utilizes many different types of encouragement along with the M&M’s, including:

• Smiles

• Verbal Praise

• Hugs

• Clapping

• High Fives

• Prizes

The teachers at Emler are loving and nurturing to allow your children the freedom to enjoy the water and acquire trustworthy swim techniques. Emler’s award winning curriculum is enhanced by fun themes, pool toys, swim equipment, and even an occasional M&M. Emler Swim School pools are designed to make students comfortable. Heating the water to 90 degrees allows your child to relax in the water. Swimming in pools that are the proper depth and distance for swim students enhances the swim lesson experience. Parents are nearby the pool and visible to students, which is especially reassuring to younger students. We want swim lessons to be your child’s fondest childhood memory.

To enroll and find out more information, please visit our website. Our Frisco location is at the southwest corner in the shopping center Preston and Stonebrook Parkway, 7151 Preston Road. 469-234-SWIM (7946)

NEW - “1776 – A New Musical”:

Music and Lyrics by Sherman Edwards

Book by Peter Stone

At The ArtCentre Theatre Plano, 1028 15th Place, Plano, TX

In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. As George Washington sends depressing messages describing one military disaster after another, the businessmen, landowners and slave holders in Congress all stand in the way of the Declaration, and a single “nay” vote will forever end the question of independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.

The show features a striking score by Sherman Edwards, and a book by Peter Stone, which is legendary in its craftsmanship. 1776! is a funny, insightful and compelling musical drama that puts a human face on the pages of history!

NEW - Frisco Aquatics to host Ice Cream with Olympian Fundraiser at Double Dip for Jasmine Parker:

On Friday, July 2, 2010, Frisco Aquatics will be hosting a fundraiser, Ice Cream with Olympian, at Double Dip Frozen Custard, on Main Street in Frisco from 5:00-8:00 PM, to raise $3,200 for North Texas girl, Jasmine Parker who has Alopecia Areata.  In August, Jasmine and her family wish to attend AlopeciaPalooza, a camp and conference for families.

AlopeciaPalooza is a special conference and camp located in Pennsylvania, for kids just like her.  Alopecia Areata is a condition of permanent hair loss.  Jasmine is ten years old, a vulnerable pre-teen age, where going to this camp would give her the opportunity to meet other kids and families with the same condition and also help change her focus from growing hair to growing self-esteem.  Parker said, “I just want to know there are other kids like me, who understand me, and who know what I deal with everyday.  I have friends who try to understand, but no one really gets it.”

Olympic Swimmer Staciana Stitts Winfield, from California is a guest coach for two weeks with Frisco Aquatics.  She will be at the event signing autographs and posing for photos while kids can try on her Olympic Gold Medal.   Winfield also suffers from Alopecia Areata and will hopefully become a new role model for Jasmine and teach her that with confidence, she can do anything!

Jasmine does not go out in public without her wig; she has never gone in water over waist-deep, which means she has never learned to swim.  The Frisco Aquatics swim team would love to see Jasmine not only learn to swim some day, but also build a support group, which will be a possibility by going to AlopeciaPalooza, where she and her family can meet others to build that network.  The Parker family is under financial hardship with Jasmine’s mother being a part-time hairdresser and her father recently losing his job as a preacher at a Mega-Church, due to the economic condition of the church.

Frisco Aquatics is inviting their 240 swimmers, their friends and families, Frisco Residents, local Frisco businesses, and all loyal Double-Dip Customers to participate in the event.  Any local swimmer or athlete, no matter what team or background is invited to come meet Olympian Staciana Stitts Winfield and join the Ice Cream Event.  In addition to the autograph session and drawing for prizes, there will also be face painting from FACES BY DARLENE.

Donations of any amount – big or small, are being collected before and during the “Ice Cream with Olympian” event.  The funds collected will send Jasmine and her family to AlopeciaPalooza.  Cash or check donations are being accepted – if you donate by check; please make checks payable to Frisco Aquatics.

Frisco Aquatics is also currently collecting donations of items for the drawing.  Participants can get their name in the drawing when they attend the event and offer a donation.  Speedo athletic bags, Speedo watches, Olympic photos, Radios, and license plate frames are a few of the great prizes.  Barefoot Athletics donated an Adidas jacket for the drawing.  Coffee from Starbucks and prizes from Eagle Gymnastics … and there will be much more!

The Frisco Aquatics Swim Team is still collecting donations from local Frisco businesses for the drawing.  For more information or if you would like to make a donation, please feel free to contact Frisco Aquatics PR Chairperson, Lynn Bergman at   703.909.1780 or visit www.FriscoAquatics.com

NEW - Frisco National Night Out Activities including How to Register Your Block Party:

Frisco is returning to the nationally recognized August date for National Night Out 2010!  On Tuesday, August 3, Frisco police and fire personnel will be out in force visiting neighborhoods, meeting with residents, and enjoying all of the festivities that are commonplace with the popular event.

If you are interested in participating in this year's National Night Out, please complete a block party registration form and return it to the Community Services Division.  The registration form allows you to request visits from police, fire, and other city services.

Please contact the department's Community Services Division at 972.292.6145 or email  if you have any questions regarding this year's National Night Out.

Safety Palooza 2010

The Frisco Police Department will be hosting its first ever Safety Palooza on Saturday, July 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., as the official kickoff party for this year's National Night Out.  We welcome everyone to come to the Frisco Police Department located at 7200 Stonebrook Parkway (across from Frisco High School) for this great event.

Frisco police and fire personnel will be on-hand to show off all of the public safety "tools of the trade," in addition to a CareFlite helicopter open for public display.  The Frisco Police Department's Motors Unit will be performing skills demonstrations with their Harley Davidsons, and a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms will show off his tactical canine's skills on mock bad guys.

In addition to all of the public service equipment and personnel during Safety Palooza, Frisco's own Snow Cone Lady will be on-hand with plenty of her chilled treats to help keep things cool.

Visit us for these few hours of fun and see firsthand why Frisco's public service professionals are regarded as some of the best in the area.

The National Association of Town Watch ranked Frisco 21st in the nation for cities with a population of 100,000-299,000 for our work and overall success in National Night Out 2009.  Last year was the first year for us to compete in Category 2 due to our recent growth to approximately 107,000 residents at the time of National Night Out 2009.  We are very proud of our ranking against such strong competitors in this category!
