The Frisco Community Newsletter - Established in 2001 - Your Key to Community

JUNE 17, 2010 – VOLUME 9, ISSUE 18

Established 2001 * Your Key To Community * Now with 41,000 Readers!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to another exciting, informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 9th year with 41,000 weekly readers. I started the newsletter when I was a member of the Frisco City Council as a comprehensive grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various issues. After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I decided to continue the weekly newsletter. We invite you to visit our website to find out how to submit your FREE community listing. Our readers are the key to The Frisco Community Newsletter and couldn’t happen without your eyes and ears letting us know what’s going on with your respective schools and organizations in our city.

We also want to make sure that we connect with you on as many levels as possible to keep you informed of what’s going on in Frisco. We have LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as blogs. You can find us in the sidebar of this newsletter.

If you want the latest about happenings in and around Frisco, be sure to follow @FriscoCommunity on Twitter.

Please make sure you check out our Spotlight Interview with Bernard Nussbaumer of Frisco’s Global Peace Factory, a gourmet coffee house that opened up earlier this year at Stonebriar Commons. We were so impressed not only with the physical layout of the coffee shop but his sense of responsibility to our community. Because we know you love freebies, Bernard has a VERY compelling offer (read: FREE!) that you can also find out about below at the end of our interview.

Please also be sure to check out our Newsletter Sponsor DeBonair Custom Cleaning of Frisco. Owner Debbie Viverito has been a partner many years in our newsletter and we are happy to see a summer special for new customers. They are also offering partial house cleanings which is great when you don’t want someone to do your entire house, but those rooms that you might need some help with.

Each year, NEWSWEEK Magazine picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests. Just over 1,600 schools out of about 27,000 (only 6 percent of all the public schools in the U.S.) made the list. We are very proud to be in the Frisco ISD- Wakeland (#700), Centennial (#911) and Frisco High (#1139) all made the list. Although some local media inferred that our ranking is “low” we think that considering the very amount of schools in the US that made it (and the criteria of this particular list) that it’s an honor. (It is, afterall, called the “Best High Schools” list!) Congrats and thank you to all the Frisco educators who work so hard to make sure our kids are getting the best education! The complete list is here.

Also, because we love to share cool finds with you (especially when it comes to saving you money) we discovered a great place online with significant discounts to places in and around Frisco and wanted to share it with you. It’s called Groupon and this past week we saw big discounts on certificates to Kenny’s Burger Joint and Kids-N-Art in Frisco. It’s free to sign up.

Be sure check out Kathy’s Personal Touch of Frisco. Kathy is offering an invaluable service to individuals and businesses in Frisco – she understands that time IS money. How often do you hear or have thought “If I only had more time in the day?” Kathy knows that sometimes the most basic daily tasks are ones that can save you time and money, and she’s intent on delivering the personal service that is so important to the success of your home or business. Plus they’ll return your call within 4 hours on a normal business day! More about her business below.

We encourage you to visit our website to submit your FREE community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out the archives, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.

Have a blessed weekend!

NEWSLETTER SPOTLIGHT: Bernard Nussbaumer of Global Peace Factory

Global Peace Factory gourmet coffee house in Frisco, Texas

This week, Erika and I had a chance to meet Bernard Nussbaumer (see the photo on the left side of the newsletter as well), the proprietor of Global Peace Factory, a gourmet coffee house that opened up earlier this year at Stonebriar Commons. We were so impressed not only with the physical layout of the coffee shop but his sense of responsibility to our community. Plus, he’s just a genuinely nice person! We hope you enjoy our interview. Make sure you read to the end because Bernard has a VERY compelling offer for anyone who will stop by!

MATT: Bernard, what made you decide to open Global Peace Factory in Frisco?

BERNARD: Strangely, I would say that Frisco came to me more than I came to Frisco. I live with my family in Dallas, so of course at first it seemed natural for me to look for a space there. But I couldn’t find anything I truly liked and felt good about it. One day, my agent called me about something I might like in Frisco. I thought, “Frisco? Frisco?! I don’t think so.” But I trusted her judgment, so I checked it out. It was empty, bright and seemed happy. I immediately liked it. A couple of days later, I met the owner, a Swiss guy like me, whom I regularly see at Swiss luncheons. Another sign. Three days later, I was signing a lease.

MATT: Definitely sounds like it was meant to be that location! We’re glad to have you in Frisco, so welcome! I understand that Global Peace Factory has an active charity initiative that reinforces your commitment to community. Please tell our readers more about that.

BERNARD: Instead of treating business and charity as two separate entities, I think we can link them, having charity piggyback business with no negative impact on success. To the contrary, I believe it will attract customers as they realize they can help others by the simple act of consuming. What makes my company special is that I do not give away to charity out of my profits, but instead out of every sale I make, from the first to the last dollar. A sort of tax before all other taxes. I do not do this just to feel good or be nice, but because I truly believe that as a society it is our responsibility to help those in need. We are all interconnected, brothers and sisters of one big family. Everyone is entitled to food, health, housing, clothing and education. Those who are deprived of any of these five elements deserve our help and support. Frisco Cares is a recent local recipient.

MATT: What a great concept, Bernard. Other than the fact that you have an active local business to local charity initiative, what else makes you different from other local coffee houses?

BERNARD: Global Peace Factory is a gourmet coffee bar, which means that everything we sell is prepared with one goal in mind: 100% of customer satisfaction. In order to achieve that goal, I had all my employees trained by a Portland team of professional baristas who taught them the art of extracting the perfect espresso and steaming the milk into a delicious velvety foam, while ‘drawing’  a heart or a rosetta as they expertly pour milk into the cup. Same approach with our paninis: they are made with the best ingredients and grilled to perfection. It seems our way of doing things work, as most of our customers keep coming back, staying for hours at times, enjoying the bright and happy décor, the unique music selection from all over the world, a very fast free Wi-FI internet, not to mention our mezzanine, perfect for any group meeting. Finally, my team is the best. They do a great job and I am proud of them.

MATT: Yes, we were very impressed when we visited! I especially think it’s great that you have a loft upstairs for use FREE of charge for groups up to 20 people – that is fantastic. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you as the owner of Global Peace Factory?

BERNARD: I am not the judge of that, but if I had to pick something it would be my ability to connect with anyone. Unless it is my accent… which shouldn’t be a surprise as I was taught English in school by some Russian old-timer who couldn’t stop rrrrrolling his r’s.

MATT: What are some favorite things in Frisco to do in your downtime?

BERNARD: Meet people. The more I come here, the more I like them. There is a lot of diversity both in terms of races and activities. So that gives me a chance to learn something every day. In four months, I have already made lots of friends and I feel totally privileged.  I love those guys of the Chamber of Commerce, totally cool and supportive. And although I do not live here, it is easy for me to understand why people like it so much.

MATT: Our newsletter readers love special offers from our partner businesses! Do you have a compelling offer for them, Bernard?

BERNARD: Mention that you saw me in your newsletter and we’ll offer you any item of your choice free of charge. You’ll be back, I guarantee. You’ll become part of the Global Peace Factory family for whom Every Cup Counts™!!! We just ask that you please come in by July 15th to get your onetime free item.

MATT: WOW! That is an amazing offer, alright! How can our readers connect with you?

BERNARD: Through our website, on our Facebook page, our Twitter page, by  phone 214-705-2664 and by driving to 1377 Legacy Drive, Suite 100 at Stonebriar Commons. We’re the orange store behind the tree across from Stonebriar Spa!

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I'm with an organization that needs to raise money. I attend school in Austin, where we frequently panhandle at intersections wearing our jerseys, holding up signs and a bucket for donations. I would love to do this in Frisco this summer as I will not be in Austin and was wondering if this was permitted here and at what intersections, or if somebody could direct me to any information.

A. It is not permitted in Frisco. This is an excerpt from the Solicitation ordinance:

Sec. 22-93. Use of public right-of-way.

(a) Solicitation of persons in vehicles. Except as permitted by state law, it shall be unlawful for any person to peddle, sell, offer, or exhibit for sale any merchandise or service, whether for profit, for a charitable purpose or otherwise to any person in a motor vehicle, truck, motorcycle or other vehicle (collectively hereinafter "Vehicle") while the Vehicle is located within a public right-of-way.

(b) Solicitation in public right-of-way. Except as permitted by state law, it shall be unlawful for any person to solicit funds, donations, contributions, employment, business or a ride, whether for profit, for a charitable purpose or otherwise, upon any public street, street right-of-way, median, traffic island, parkway, or other public right-of-way, excluding sidewalks designed for pedestrian use, within the City of Frisco.

(c) Acknowledgement of state law. Frisco acknowledges that the state legislature has adopted V.T.C.A., Transportation Code § 552.0071, which became effective on May 3, 2005.

(d) Selling or attempting to sell on sidewalk/right-of-way. It shall be unlawful for any person to peddle, sell, offer, or exhibit for sale any merchandise or service, whether for profit, for a charitable purpose or otherwise on a public sidewalk or road without previous permission granted by the city manager, or his designee.
