Dear Friends,
Welcome to another exciting, informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 9th year with 41,000 weekly readers. I started the newsletter when I was a member of the Frisco City Council as a comprehensive grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various issues. After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I decided to continue the weekly newsletter. We invite you to visit our website to find out how to submit your FREE community listing. Our readers are the key to The Frisco Community Newsletter and couldn’t happen without your eyes and ears letting us know what’s going on with your respective schools and organizations in our city.
We also want to make sure that we connect with you on as many levels as possible to keep you informed of what’s going on in Frisco. We have LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as blogs. You can find us in the sidebar of this newsletter.
If you want the latest about happenings in and around Frisco, be sure to follow @FriscoCommunity on Twitter.
What a busy last few weeks! Last Friday we saw our daughter Kaleigh Lafata, a Senior at Wakeland High School and contributor to this newsletter as the Texas Tornado Junior Reporter, graduate from Dr. Pepper Arena. It was a very nice ceremony and we commend Dr. Mike Farish for doing such a great job as the “glue” of the ceremony. Great speeches were delivered by the Salutatorian Cristina Reveles, Valedictorian Joanna Henry and Class President Thomas Peres. We especially enjoyed the moment that former Frisco ISD School Board member and longtime Frisco resident Brooks “Bud” Thompson shared with his graduating son and member of the baseball team Mitchell Thompson on stage during the ceremony.
Speaking of baseball, Mitchell and the rest of the Wakeland High School varsity baseball team have caused quite a stir in the high school baseball world and in the media by upsetting some very strong contenders (including #1 nationally ranked Rockwall-Heath, who the Wolverines swept 14-6 and 12-3) and being the 1st WHS team to make it to the State Finals. Our son Carl is on the team and we have enjoyed watching all the young men work diligently to get as far as they did. Although they did not win the State title this year, the trip to Dell Diamond in Round Rock was memorable, and we are certain that 1st year coach Coach Barry Rose is very proud of what his team accomplished this year. We know we are! We also enjoyed providing Twitter updates via @FriscoCommunity for those who weren’t able to make the trips to the various playoff sites.
Please make sure you check out our Spotlight Interview with Kathy Frank, owner of Kathy’s Personal Touch of Frisco. Kathy is offering an invaluable service to individuals and businesses in Frisco – she understands that time IS money. How often do you hear or have thought “If I only had more time in the day?” Kathy knows that sometimes the most basic daily tasks are ones that can save you time and money, and she’s intent on delivering the personal service that is so important to the success of your home or business.
Finally, this Saturday is the run-off election for the Frisco City Council spot. Vying for this position is Jim Joyner and John Keating. Please get out and vote. It is an extremely important election for the City of Frisco and if you would like our thoughts on who you should vote for, please You can also find information on where to vote here.
We encourage you to visit our website to submit your FREE community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out the archives, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.
Have a blessed weekend!
Erika and Matt Lafata

Congratulations to Frisco’s Claire Copeland, winner of the El Dorado Mazda/Chevrolet in McKinney Cheeseburger in Paradise contest. Claire won a cruise to Key West, courtesy of Travel for You, Inc. as well as 2 tickets to the Jimmy Buffett concert held last month in Frisco. Every test drive during the contest period received either a pair of tickets to Hawaiian Falls Waterpark in The Colony or a gift card to Kenny’s Burger Joint in Frisco. Pictured here (left to right) is contest winner Claire and her husband Gavin Copeland; Matt Lafata, publisher of The Frisco Community Newsletter, Mazda Manager Eric Ziegler of Frisco, and Chevrolet Manager Ilya Blond.

Frisco Community Newsletter Publisher Matt Lafata & Business Owner Kathy Frank
MATT: Kathy, why did you decide to open your business in Frisco?
KATHY: I have lived in Frisco for 14 years and love it here. I know this amazing city SO well. There’s an entrepreneurial spirit in Frisco with so many small successful businesses. I wanted to help be the “silent voice” behind their success, to take care of all the things that happen behind the scenes. My business is very personal and is the proverbial “wind beneath their wings.”
MATT: What makes you different from your competition?
KATHY: We offer truly personal service. We commit to a business receiving a call back within 4 hours during normal business hours. Additionally, all of our associates are drug screened and receive thorough a background check. We take the guess work out by communicating quickly and effectively with our customers. Simply, our goal is that you will always get a personal touch which seems to be a lost art these days!
MATT: What is your main area of focus for personal services?
KATHY: Anything our clients need within reason. Errand running, party planning, pick up dry cleaning, someone to take you to the doctor, pick up your prescriptions, organize your kitchen...Are you new Frisco or moving here? We can help with that also.
An example, we had a client today that is out of town on business. I went to her doctor and picked up a prescription, had it filled and then sent it overnight for an early morning delivery. These are the kinds of services we offer. We “get” that sometimes things require immediate attention and we are here to accommodate all of those situations professionally.
MATT: Erika and I love Frisco for SO many reasons – one of which is the variety of restaurants here in this amazing city! Having been here 14 years, what are some of your favorite places to eat in Frisco?
KATHY: Fadi's, Genghis Grill, Purple Kiwi, Chez Moi, Moo Yah, Sake Toro, Christina's, Jin Beh, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen.
MATT: Those are all TERRIFIC places and we commend you on having great taste in restaurants! Do you have a special offer for our newsletter readers to try your services?
KATHY: Sure! If your readers purchase one hour of service they will get the second hour half-price. Just mention The Frisco Community Newsletter.
MATT: Kathy, how can people get in touch with you?
KATHY: They can call me at 214 529-4957 or Our website can be found here. |

Quotes of the Week:
"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein
“Give advice; if people don't listen, let adversity teach them” Ethiopian Proverb
“The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.” – Albert Ellis

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. Is there a time-line for when the speed limit on Lebanon is going to be officially raised to 50? Or, is it planned to leave it posted as 45 and 40?
A. The speed limits on major roadways are not set according to any pre-determined plan. Instead, speed limits are determined based on engineering studies (a standardized process that is used nationwide). We conduct speed zone studies on every arterial roadway in the City at least once every three years in order to see if the posted speed limits need to be adjusted. Each roadway is broken into logical segments and studied individually. These studies will sometimes result in different speed limits on different segments of the same roadway if those segments have different characteristics.
Based on the number of driveways, hills, and curves, it is unlikely that any segment of Lebanon Road will ever get a speed limit higher than 40 or 45 mph.
